FAINU SCHOOL
Our Rich History
The very first efforts to provide education to students began in the 1970s by the Imaam of island’s Friday Mosque, Mr. Ali Hassan Manik. He started teaching Quran and Islam in his own house Veranda in the name “Makuthabussaniyya”. Later it was changed to the south veranda of the community house (used as the island office then). Throughout this period, teaching was carried out by the island office staff including Imaam.
Fainu Makuthabu
The start of “Fainu Makuthabu” was the first formal schooling in the island. The whole community involved to build the first ever school in the island “Fainu Makuthabu” using their own local materials. The school was built in the year and opened on 29th September 1981.
I.H.E.P School
It brought a dramatic change to our schooling with the establishment of the first constructed big school on the island I.H.E.P School. It was a government-initiated project to expand education through out the country and a grant-giving American organization called I.H.E.P provided main materials needed. Then the island community contributed and constructed 2 classrooms and an office as the school building under the name ‘Fainu Makuthabu’. The foundation stone for this building was laid on October 9, 1983, by the then R. Atoll Chief, Mr. Qasim Kaleyfaanu. This Makuthabu (school) was inaugurated on November 17, 1985, by the then Minister of Atolls Administration, Honorable Ustaz Abdullah Hameed.

Changing from Makuthabu to Fainu School
The institution was renamed “Fainu School” on June 24, 1999, and it was decided by the Island Office as the governing body. At that time, education was provided up to the primary and middle school levels.
The school became a government-managed institution on December 1, 2005. Since then, every aspect of school was funded by the government. At the beginning, the school offered education from Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, and as Special classes. Subsequently, teaching expanded from Primary Grade 1 to 3 and then Grades 1 to 5. Following this, in addition to primary grades, Middle School grades (Grades 6, 7) were introduced. While initially teaching in the Dhivehi medium, the school transitioned to the English medium in the year 2000. After years of providing primary and middle school education, the school began offering Secondary grades in 2008, and the first batch of students sat for the SSC (Secondary School Certificate) examination in 2010. In 2012, the school’s teaching schedule was changed to a single session.
The years 2012 and 2013 are noteworthy for the school in terms of educational achievements. In 2012, 2 students from the school were ranked in the National Top 10. Furthermore, the school received the Progress Award and the Achievement Award in the same year. Looking at the results of the 2013 secondary examinations, 66.67% of the school’s students passed in five subjects. This is also a significant achievement for the school’s history.
